Jessica James is a professor of instruction in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She teaches media writing, feature writing, and travel journalism while helping students develop practical reporting skills both inside and outside the classroom.
As a faculty leader for Texas State's Study in America program, James guides students through immersive learning experiences that combine travel, journalism, and multimedia storytelling. These educational trips provide opportunities for students to report from unique destinations while practicing interviewing, photography, videography, and feature writing in real-world settings.
Prior to joining Texas State, James worked as a professional journalist covering local government, education, and community news for newspapers in Ohio. Her reporting experience continues to shape her teaching philosophy, emphasizing curiosity, accuracy, and strong storytelling.
Throughout her career, James has remained committed to experiential learning. Through Study in America, she encourages students to explore new places, engage with diverse communities, and discover meaningful stories that might otherwise go untold.
Whether leading students through national parks, historic communities, or cultural landmarks, James believes some of the best journalism begins with observation, conversation, and a willingness to step outside one's comfort zone.
